The race to become the 2023 High School Football America national champion is in progress.
With lots of the best 25 teams facing other highly ranked opponents at the start, fans can now start talking about which teams might be contenders for the championship.
Friday Games
Mater Dei from California, who were ranked first in the High School Football America 300 national rankings before the season began, got things rolling with a 28-14 victory against Corona Centennial from California, who were ranked 22nd.
The defending national champions, St. John Bosco, who were ranked second in our preseason rankings, began their season with a 42-22 win over Liberty from Nevada, who were ranked 177th.
Buford from Georgia, ranked 7th, made a strong impression with an 18-0 win over St. Frances Academy from Maryland, who were ranked 3rd.
Bishop Gorman from Nevada, ranked 4th, turned things around by scoring 42 points to beat Corner Canyon from Utah, who were ranked 74th. Bishop Gorman was trailing 28-21 at halftime. Two of their running backs, Micah Kaapana and De Von Rice, both scored three touchdowns.
Similar to Buford, IMG Academy from Florida also started with a great win. The 5th-ranked Ascenders defeated Lipscomb Academy, a two-time reigning Tennessee state champion, with a score of 35-10. Lipscomb Academy was ranked 23rd in the HSFA 300.
In Ohio, in a contest between two of the most successful high school football teams, Massillon Washington, ranked 32nd, beat Valdosta from Georgia, ranked 176th, with a score of 28-17. This victory marked the 933rd win for the Tigers, who are fourth on the all-time wins list. Valdosta holds the top spot in all-time wins with 941.
