As we step into 2023, Bishop Gorman finds itself in its usual position, holding the top spot in the High School Football America Nevada Top 10, backed by NFL Play Football. Since we started using our special formula to rank teams, there have only been two weeks when the Gaels weren’t at the number one spot. The exception was at the conclusion of the 2019 season, when Liberty put an end to BG’s streak of ten consecutive state titles.
Considering Gorman’s challenging national schedule, they’re also expected to be contenders for the national championship. In the Preseason HSFA 300 national rankings, the Gaels are placed at an impressive No. 5.
The regular season lineup for BG involves facing five teams from the preseason rankings — No. 9 Miami Central (Florida), No. 22 Corona Centennial (California), No. 74 Corner Canyon (Utah), No. 85 Long Beach Poly (California), and Liberty at No. 177.
Liberty holds the top preseason position in our state. The Patriots are in for a test during Week 1 as they journey to Southern California to play against the defending national champion, St. John Bosco. The Braves are proudly ranked as the second-best team in the entire nation.
This year is the first time the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association has organized their 5A division in a new way. The 5A category has been separated into three specific groups — 5A I, 5A II, and 5A III.
This change came about because of how dominant Gorman has been. The Gaels have secured 12 out of the last 13 state titles in the largest classification of the state. The new arrangement places the Gaels in 5A I along with Arbor View, Coronado, Desert Pines, Liberty, Silverado, and Shadow Ridge. Notably, there aren’t any northern schools in this category.
Each of the three 5A divisions will have its own state champion.
Now, let’s take a look at the other two 5A classifications:
For Class 5A-II in the North, we have Bishop Manogue, Damonte Ranch, McQueen, Reed, Reno, and Spanish Springs. As for Class 5A-II in the South, the schools included are Basic, Faith Lutheran, Durango, Foothill, Green Valley, Las Vegas, and Sierra Vista.
In Class 5A-III in the North, we have Carson, Douglas, Galena, Hug, North Valleys, and Wooster. Meanwhile, Class 5A-III in the South includes Cimarron-Memorial, Clark, Desert Oasis, Legacy, Palo Verde, Rancho, and Spring Valley.
