At the start of the 2023 high school football season, four teams in the South Carolina Top 10 rankings experienced losses in Week 1.
The team at the top, Dutch Fork, remained in the first position despite a 48-17 defeat against Georgia’s Colquitt County. This caused Colquitt County to move up from No. 18 to No. 13 in the national rankings by High School Football America, which is influenced by NFL Play Football. Unfortunately, Dutch Fork dropped from its initial No. 11 ranking to No. 37 in this week’s rankings.
Before the official season began, Northwestern held the second spot in the rankings, but it slipped down one position due to a loss against Providence Day from North Carolina, which is ranked 108th nationally. In the 300 national rankings, the Trojans are placed at No. 130.
The reigning 4A champion, South Florence, climbed up from No. 3 to No. 2 following a dominating 54-14 victory over Goose Creek.
Both Byrnes and South Pointe advanced two positions after securing impressive wins.
South Pointe jumped from No. 7 to No. 5 after narrowly defeating Spartanburg with a score of 16-14. Spartanburg, on the other hand, dropped one place to No. 7.
Byrnes now stands at No. 6 in this week’s rankings. This shift comes after their 24-9 victory against North Carolina powerhouse Hough. This win propelled the Rebels to No. 200 in the national rankings. Prior to this game, Hough was positioned at No. 130 in the preseason national Top 300.
Unfortunately, Gaffney experienced a drop of three spots to No. 8 after facing a loss against Crest High School from North Carolina.
